Fishing was tough for the Ones on Day One of their adventures into the wilds of Montana, but not so tough that, on Fathers Day, Father Brian Shepard could not unite with son Josef Shepard to christen the Twenty Inch board with a pair of twenty inch plus browns landed on the Bitterroot, thereby bestowing on them the first of this year’s yellow hats, awarded for the largest trout caught each day (see separate posting for the hated pair). Shown above is daughter Trina “Boots” Clausen with the first fish of E-12—a strapping 4 inch beauty—coupled by a nice Root brown trout caught by yours truly, a glorious 18” Boots rainbow held by our Double Up Outfitter John “The Great but Propaneless” Gould and the biggest catch of the day—the gang at Hooters après fishing!!
Changing weather, rising water from a recent rise in temperatures and the dreaded “W” world—don’t say it aloud but it is spelled--w….i….n….d—literally blew us all off the Root mid afternoon on Day One, so much so that most of the gang headed up the Blackfoot River this Day Two to fish that fabled river as did John “SOS” Reimann and “Minnow Mel” McCormack did on Day One, with the former landing a 19 ½ bull trout—close but no cigar, SOS!! We shall see how Day Two fared in a bit as I head back into town to regret the Ones and, yes, their now very-favorite watering hole—Hooters, where, on Day One “Gentleman John” Rosenbaum and Bro Kers Clausen “won” the honors (of picking up the tab, that is) by being the last boat in at 5:50 p.m.—a mistake I assure you that they will not repeat!
After dinner the Ones on Day One where honored by the presence of National Wildlife Federation Regional guru Tom France who talked of bison restoration, the oil boom in the Dakotas and NWF’s massive campaign to get 10 million kids out into nature—thanks for being with us Sir Tom!!
Best to all from the emerging scene of it all,
Rock Creek Ron
