Group Three, Day One

Welcome Da Threes to the glories of Montana!!

Day One for Dem Threes saw a handful of large fish (witness above the fishing pair of “Napa Mark” Grassi and “Tom Tom” Brumfield first registering the Threes in on the Twenty Inch Board for their two (count ‘em, one each) 20” Bitterroot Cuttbows) from all three of our main rivers, the Clark Fork of the Columbia, the Bitterroot and the Big (“A River Runs Through It”) Blackfoot, with the SS Demetry “The Ghost” Kondrasheff/ “The Donald” Buresh boasting between 40-50 Blackfoot “squirming” picture shy fish (earning them a clear hit in the b.s. meter conveniently [and appropriately!] provided to E-12 by the Wonderful Ones) which was in marked contrast from the vessel occupied by veteran Scott “Crack” Mc Adams (whose photo was shown to the assembled Threes in full explanation of the fullness of his rear end given name) who truthfully reported on a fraction of that number of fish, his being modestly caught on (finally fishable!) dry flies.  Compare also the O’Malley vessel which found wife Cindy catching her first three fish ever “on the fly” and hubby “Madman” reporting on seven fish aboard along with two soaring eagles—just how that metaphor mixes is up to “y’all” to figure out!

The highlight of bride-in-waiting Stacie “Spitfire” King was finding certified moose tracks at her luncheon pull out along with mink, eagles and a gaggle of Clark Fork smaller fish all to leave veteran husband-to-be Ed “Surefire” Flynn wondering just what his future might hold in three short weeks:  a wedding of sure spit with mink, moose and eagles providing colorful Montana images to highlight their soon-to-be New York nuptials.  And then there was the doctors’ boat of Mike Dixon and Jeff Georgia, each successfully fishing their brand new spankin’ bamboo (see, I can actually say that now!) on the upper Bitterroot, landing 18” fish, and the duo of Chris “Babe” Richards and Dick “Andros” Seale each landing 10 fish, with the latter getting the guide gag gift of E-12 by providing his guide with a true can of living worms together with instructions on their proper usage—way to go Andros!!

Napa Supervisor Bill “Incumbent” Dodd then told of a magical 20 fish day with his bride Mary (she being fish #21, btw!) featuring rainbows, browns and now-E-12 coveted Rocky Mountain whitefish as did Jim “Wildman” Hendrickson with his beautiful sidekick Maia King, their 20 fish all caught on dry flies a-la-bamboo with Maria saying that she sure would have caught a lot more fish on her first day fishing ever if someone had just told her how to set a hook—wild, man…simply wild!  Father-son combo of John and Joe O’Dea reported on a 10 fish day with son Joe (all of 8 years old this year) beamingly bragging on his first fish ever, a 12” rainbow…and caught on bamboo, no less. (You have no idea how hard it has been to write these reports for the past two weeks not mentioning the “b” word---bamboo, bamboo, bamboo…see, now I fell a whole lot better about the whole thing---bamboo, bamboo, bamboo…boo!  Rounding out the non-Clausen flotilla was Tim “Four More Years” Aldrich telling of his fishing partner “Joe the Jet” Perry’s successful first day ever fishing from a drift boat, with bamboo no less—almost forgot to mention that!—and between them landing 18-20 fish with Tim’s 17 incher topping the tote.

And then there were a threesome of Clausen vessels occupied by all three of my issue—Brian, Tyler and Trina—fishing together with their dad (and two of Brian’s sons—Evan and “Niner Noah”—for the very first time ever.  Pictured above is my boat partner Evan who, at 10 years old-to-be on July 11th was awarded a yellow had, along with Mark and Tom for their twenty inchers, for helping “Pops” land a 19” beauty of a rainbow. Accompanying the Clausen Crew was E-12 mascot “Ma’am the Lab who kept everyone spritzed on this first hot day of fishing (temps reached into the low 90’s) who traveled down stream with Uncle Tyler and Aunt Trina and watched 8 year old Niner Noah hook, set, land and release his first two fish ever…”one being a rainbow fish and the other ‘something else’” per NN.  The highlight of the day for my boat was the spotting of a brand new fawn on the side of the river with grandson Evan and I realizing at the same time that we were blessed to be the very first humans to lay eyes on this wonder of nature.  What a special day it was!!

Oh, and did I mention every one of Dem Threes fished Day One with bamboo?!?  Yep, bamboo, bamboo, bamboo!!!

Best to all from the scene of it all,

Rock Creek Ron
