FW: E-12: A Final Note of Thanks!

Fellow E-12ers:

I am here in my Montana office listening to the melodious tunes of John Denver as I am wont to do each year as I sit down and write to each of you who participated in Extravaganza 2012, our tenth annual foray into the wilds of Montana.  Both Kathy and I were blessed with your presence again this year and I hope that with you, as it is with us, the sounds, smells and magic of E-12 yet lives in your lives.

Our goal this, our tenth, year was to do something very, very special and, with over a year and a half planning, I am still rewarded by the looks on each of your faces as we announced, via our film, that you each would be taking home with you a custom made, reeled and cased bamboo rod from Sweetgrass Rods, the finest rod makers in the world.  As you look back on how those rods are/were made, reflect with me on the single handed stunning beauty of all that we witnessed this year:  the rivers (their beauty and bounty); the vistas (by and large uninterrupted since the days of Lewis & Clark over two hundred years ago); the bamboo (pristine, elegant, beautiful in you hands as it was in those of its makers:  Glenn Brackett, Jerry Kustich,  and Dave Delisi, each of whom travelled from Twin Bridges, MT on multiple occasions to be with us this year); the camaraderie  (over 80 of you mingled and co-mingled so elegantly together while you were here); and the hilarity of it all (the trees around Headquarters yet ring with the peal of your laughter!).  Reflect upon and that we did both individually and collectively; reflect upon the sound of the rivers; reflect upon the sounds of the birds (the screeching of the osprey and the eagle); and reflect about the simply solitude and simultaneous warmth at being as one with Mother Nature.  Reflect upon the simple, elegant beauty of it all.

We hope that your E-12 respite with us was a fun, nurturing and rewarding one.  We sure caught a lot of fish (well over 1500 in my book—congrats again Group Threer Bill “Bull” Dodd on your 31” Extravaganza record-tying bull trout!); we sure drank a lot of wine (with Group One again getting their long-standing award for the most case ingested in just five days!); and we sure met a lot of interesting folks along the way, starting with Newt Gingrich at Group One’s Opening Day lunch and cruising right through the tenure of E-12 with Tom France, Kit Fisher and daughter Trina “Boots” Clausen all of the National Wildlife Federation; with Grant Kier and Glen Marangelo of the Five Valleys Land Trust (in our celebration of the saving of the mouth of Rock Creek from adverse development); with president Tim Aldrich, Executive Director Dick Paulsen, and Development Director Jeff Hagener all of the Montana Wildlife Federation; and with our wonderful Montana Matters songsters, Troubadour Shane Clouse and inimitable Bob Wire.  Simply stated, there was never a dull moment!!

The primary purpose of the Extravaganza is for your Hostess With The Mostess, Kookin’ Kathy, and I to open our doors to this parcel of paradise we were fortunate to find a decade ago, to welcome you into our home as members of our extended family (both business and social) and, for veterans and you now-former rookies out there alike, to show you a time the likes of which you most likely never have experienced before outside our purview:  We wanted you to see the treasures that this wonderful Treasure State has to offer and, as we parted ways, to provide an easy opportunity for each of you to “get involved”, as Kathy and I have, to do our part to make sure the wonders that we were able to witness are here for your children and their children’s children, just as in Group Three where young Joe O’Dea had the opportunity to experience Montana in a manner that he otherwise never would have had, and to experience that at the same time with my three grandchildren, whose E-12 smiling pictures honor this desk from where I now write.  To that end, thank you each for becoming Wildlife Legacy Council members of the Montana Wildlife Federation (whose mission it is to preserve, as is, all that you witnessed while you were with us) and thank you each for frequently visiting our www.montanamatters.com  Montana Matters website to serendipitously make an on-line purchase or contribution reflecting your lingering and perpetuating reflection on all that you witnessed while you were with us this year—as I mentioned to each group, if each of us were to give the equivalent of “a latte a day” to this wonderful campaign (y)our Montana world will continue to be a better place.

John Denver’s “Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy” now sings overhead--thanks for being our sunshine this summer during E-12,,,”sunshine almost always makes me high”—y’all sure did that to us this summer for which Kathy and I now extend to your our perpetual thanks and hope that the spirit of Extravaganza 2012 lives with you forever.  May you forever cast (y)our bamboo with our knowing love and appreciation; may you think of us often and smile as you so do; may you forever reflect upon the beauty of these “wild Montana skies” (thanks for that timely ending cue, Mr. Denver!).

Best to all in conclusion of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

E-12: Bragging Rights Bill Dodd.htm-Saturday's Napa Valley Register

Group Three Napa County Supervisor Bill “Bull” Dodd makes Napa headlines when word of his 31” Extravaganza record-tying bull trout got out….hmm, wonder how that happened?!?

Congrats, Bill, er Bull!!

Bragging Rights: Bill Dodd

Napa County Supervisor Bill Dodd displays the 31-inch, 14- or 15-pound bull trout he caught and released in Montana's Blackfoot River during the 10th annual Rock Creek Extravaganza, a fly fishing trip with people mostly from throughout the Bay Area. They fished two days on the Bitterroot River and one the Blackfoot River and had excellent fishing all three days. Dodd said he caught this fish in a drift boat on a nymph, that it took 15 minutes to land, and that it was the largest fish caught by any of the 80 anglers on this year's trip and tied for the largest in the event's decade-long history. He fished with his wife, Mary, and said she also caught and released some great fish.

E-12: Donations to Montana Matters!

Fellow Extravaganzers:

Consistent with the age-old sage advice that “it is better to give than to receive”, I reach out to each of you, post Extravaganza 2012, to follow up on my closing day remarks to each Group and to ask for your donation to the blessed Montana Matters (www.montanamatters.com ) of the Montana Wildlife Federation.  MWF is the oldest conservation preservation organization yet active in the Treasure State and, because of its 77 year legacy of proper activism to preserve access to hunters and fisherfolk to the natural resources of Montana, much of what we saw and enjoyed during this year’s most extravagant event was available to us for our use and enjoyment.

As I mentioned to each group, if we all donated “a latte a day” for the preservation of Montana’s natural resources that joining of arms and wallets would immeasurably contribute to the protection of Montana’s natural resources.  What Montana has is very, very rare in this day and age, to wit:  one of the country’s largest geographical states with one of its smallest populations (yet under 1 million folks).

The ongoing fight to preserve Montana, through the “Collaboration for Conservation” theme of the Montana Matters campaign, is one that must be levied on an unrelenting basis to assure that those who would chose to privatize Montana’s natural resources and bountiful wildlife, both footed and finned, (and that threat is a very real, living one, btw) are thwarted in their footsteps and that the legacy of all that we witnessed during E-12 is preserved for the generations that are to follow us.

You as Extravaganzers know better than most just how much Montana matters:  You saw its vistas, you smelled its flora and fauna, you touched the wild wonder of its pectoral offerings, and, for that, you left that great state a better place than in which you found it.  Your continued engagement, both as WLC members of MWF (for which I thank you) and financial and personal contributions are key to this state’s future condition and assure your legacy as participants in Montana’s legacy.

In each of your E-12 gift bags I gave you, in addition to our most recent Montana Matters cd, one of our MM brochures with donation information.  For those who have misplaced theirs, another copy is attached for your usage.

Here is what I ask on behalf of the natural resources of Montana:  Look back on your E-12 experience, quantify it (if you can!) and then get out your checkbook or credit card information and give back to Montana in proportion to what you received.  We already have one Group Three gift of $7,500 from one of our most geographically distant E-12 participants—a great personal friend who also has developed a life-long bonded relationship with our Montana.  You can now visually see what Montana matters to him.

That precise dollar amount is not what I am asking of each of you, however.

What I am asking is that you each use the donation form(s) that I have give to you and to each make a contribution to this wonderful campaign in at least three digits (i.e., count in hundreds of dollars) with an initial integer being one that you deem appropriate and do it NOW.  There is a new legislative session upcoming (the MT legislature meets every other year) and MWF is gearing up to fight the literally hundreds of bills that are forming to interfere with all that we value.  Your donated funds will be used to hire the (expensive) legislative consultant that is needed to wage this war, so please be a generous as you possibly can for, indeed, we are amidst a war with adverse interests who are competing and vying for access to Montana’s natural resources, rivers and forests to your future exclusion.

Thanks in advance for working with us to become part of the solution to preserve all that we collectively witnessed together during Extravaganza 2012 for Montana Matters!!

Thanks again for doing it NOW.

On a go-forward basis, there are also other ways to contribute:  (a) any order of a(nother) Sweetgrass Rod (www.sweetgrassrods.com ) within the next year will find Sweetgrass (one of our MM corporate sponsors) donating 25% of your rod purchase to MM; (b) our Fourth MM Napa Concert fundraiser will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, and your attendance is encouraged; and (c) 24/7 the MM website (www.montanamatters.com ) is open for your retail therapy enjoyment and donation ease (yes, you can even avoid filling out the form by going on line this very moment to make your donation!) with the advanced knowledge that the blessings of your givings be returned to you multifold!

Best to all in the yet glowing aftermath of it all,

Rock Creek Ron

The Three Marvels!!

The Extravaganza is a production of epic proportions and, in appreciation for all that they did to make the kitchen and E-12 inner workings glide so efficiently and succulently, shown above (from left to right) are Julie Meir, Suzanne Greenberg and Barbie Kingsland proudly displaying the hand engraved bamboo pens bearing their names in total appreciation for all that they did to make Extravaganza 2012 the true success that it was.

Thanks, Dynamic Trio—may the blessings of this great event bring smiles to you each day between now and your E-13 return(s)!!

With all our extravagant love,

Rock Creek Ron

Double Up Thanks!!!

Once again, as he has now done for us for the past five (count ‘em!) year, John “The Great But Propaneless” Gould and his cadre of Double Up Outfitters guides have outdone themselves in providing safe, timely, friendly and fishy boats for our Extravaganza use.  This year, John sheparded over 100 boats for our E-12 usage, each with sterling performance and each with bounty to show.  In consideration for his faithfulness and thoroughness, shown above is Rock Creek Ron presenting Propaneless with an Extravaganza special—one of 80 (count ‘em) 5 wt 8’3” special edition Sweetgrass Mantra bamboo rods (complete with monogrammed case and Able reel) that highlighted Extravaganza 2012.

All of our extravagant thanks, “Mr. Guide”; and the gods are smiling on you as well, for after as many years, you were (finally!) the winner of our Tenth Annual Fly Casting Contest (prophetically co-sponsored by thee and me!).

Onto E-13!!

The Tale of the E-12 Twenty Inch Board!!

It’s official!!

Group Three, Day Three: Fish Fireworks!!

Well, the sun, moon, wind, weather and the stars (finally!) aligned up on the Fourth of July for Group Three’s Day Three, and what a day it was!!  Prior to their early morning launch, the previous eight days of fishing had produced a total of 15 Twenty Inch Club entrants…well, Dem Threes dented that board by posting an E-12 daily record of seven (count ‘em) twenty inchers, the biggest of which were caught by the SS Dodd, with Incumbent Bill and wife “Photobug Mary” (she alone took more pictures that the ENTIRE photo-shy Ones!!) leading the way with Bill’s all-Extravaganza record tying 31” bull trout (featured above) and matched by wife Mary in the same boat on the same day with a pair of 20 and 22 ½ matching beauties.  Bill was heard to comment during the Fourth of July bash hosted by the Threes that “perhaps they should rename the “bull trout” to the “Bill trout” , to which I mused about Bill that the fish was already named after him, he being a wonderful Napa veteran politician!  Congrats “Bull”—yes, that is now your official Extravaganza name Bill, er Bull!—and Photobug  on a display of fish fireworks on the Fourth!!

Not to be left out of the hunt for the yellow hat and yellow shirt (Bull and Photobug were awarded joint yellow hats, btw, along with Bull taking home the Three’s coveted Yellow Shirt—no bull!) were (a) Jim Hendrickson with his 20” Blackfoot brown; (b) Dick “Andros” Seale with his beauty of a 20” Bitterroot bow; (c) beauty Chris “Babe” Richards with her 20 ½ “ Bitterbow; and (c) “Napa Mark” Grassi with his 20 ¾” Clark Fork rainbow, the latter declaring that is solo 19+ fish day on the lower Clark Fork was official declaration that “the Clark Fork is back” following its Milltown Dam restoration!!  Even MechBanker Scott “Crack” McAdams had a bang-up 40+ fish day as did the entire fleet, with the O’Malley’s landing an 18 ½ incher, Stacie King beating out (again!) fiancé Ed Flynn (they get married in less that three weeks from now—yikes!!) with her 16 ¼” take, and the father-son SS O’Dea posting a 16” best along with “The Donald” Buresh and Demetry “The Ghost” Kondrasheff coming home all smiles, the latter completing his sixth (count ‘em) Extravaganza and (out)fishing with yours truly the following day for a 40+ fish Blackfoot day.  MWF President Tim “Four More Years” Aldrich finished well with his sidekick MWF board member “Joe The Jet” Perry as did MWF Development Director Jeff Hagener.

Fireworks, indeed, gang, as the Threes spanked ‘em all on Day Three, the final day of Extravaganza 2012.

Viva la Extravaganza!!
